Adventures in the English countryside and beyond with the Yorkshire veterinarian and #1 New York Times–bestselling author of All Creatures Great and Small. When World War II ends and James Herriot returns to his wife and new family in the English countryside, he dreams mostly of Sunday roasts and Yorkshire puddings, but new adventure has a way of tracking him down. Soon Herriot finds himself escorting a large number of sheep on a steamer to Russia, puzzling through the trials of fatherhood, and finding creative ways to earn the trust of suspicious neighbors who rely on him for the wellbeing of their beloved animals. Herriot’s winning humor and self-deprecating humanity shine through every page, and his remarkable storytelling has captivated readers for generations. “This is Herriot at his best,” said the Washington Post of this New York Times bestseller by the author of All Things Bright and Beautiful and Every Living Thing. The Lord God Made Them All is a true story of postwar England that, according to the Columbus Dispatch, “just explodes with the joy of living and loving and caring.”

To most people, mathematics means working with numbers. But as Keith Devlin shows in Mathematics: The Science of Patterns, this definition has been out of date for nearly 2,500 years. Mathematicians now see their work as the study of patterns—real or imagined, visual or mental, arising from the natural world or from within the human mind. Using this basic definition as his central theme, Devlin explores the patterns of counting, measuring, reasoning, motion, shape, position, and prediction, revealing the powerful influence mathematics has over our perception of reality. Interweaving historical highlights and current developments, and using a minimum of formulas, Devlin celebrates the precision, purity, and elegance of mathematics.

Pedagogical theory arising from general education has long dominated discourse in both research and policy-making in education: this is also evident in vocational studies. Today, both locally and internationally, the complex processes of vocational pedagogy play a central role in the discussions. Work-based learning, the master-apprenticeship learning tradition, and the pedagogy of vocations and professions are all important concepts in on-going education policy debates. Contradictions between different learning traditions are clearly evident in vocational pedagogy: learning according to the workshop traditions or learning in the classroom, vocational theory and general theory, learning at school and learning in a work situation. This book is based on research in Norway and examines problems of teaching and learning in relation to vocational curricula of upper secondary schooling, apprentices’ experiences and masters thesis-writing in the field of vocational pedagogy. The book also explores the question of vocational education and gender, today and in the past.
